Engevita D - rich in vitamin D, naturally
Consumers are increasingly looking for solutions that can harmoniously combine main nutrients (proteins, carbohydrates and lipids), as well as specific vitamins and minerals, with a balanced calories intake.
Yeast extracts and inactivated yeasts have always been among the key products for the food industry: they are used to give certain hints of flavor or improve the structure, but they are especially interesting in the field of nutrition as natural sources of proteins and amino acids, which also influence our mood.
Engevita is a line of inactivated yeasts that Lallemand Bio-Ingredients has developed to enhance the taste of food preparations, so as to reduce the salt in recipes, but now also achieves excellent nutritional properties.
Selected strains of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae are grown on a substrate of molasses and are subsequently inactivated. Engevita’s Yeasts are a natural source of highly assimilable proteins, rich in essential amino acids; they also generate dietary fiber, minerals, micronutrients and vitamins. Today new references - enriched with various nutrients such as natural Vitamin D and group B vitamins (Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin, Pantothenic Acid, Folic Acid, Biotin, Vitamin B6 and Vitamin B12) - add to traditional products.
Vitamin D plays a vital role in the well-being of our body. For example, vitamin D, in its form of vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is fundamental for the development and maintenance of bone structure. Not only that: vitamin D activates and boosts our immune system, regulates the level and metabolism of calcium, may help to prevent infections, hypertension, cardiovascular problems.
Sunlightis the most powerful source of vitamin D. When exposed to sunlight and to ultraviolet B (UVB) light, 7-Dehydrocholesterol in our skin is converted into vitamin D3 and then into its active form. Only few foods contain good quantities of vitamin D, namely fish, dairy products, eggs, liver, and green vegetables.

Lallemand’s special production process allows the yeast to photochemically synthetize vitamin D in a similar way as humans do: when exposed to ultraviolet B, the sterols naturally present in Engevita D are converted to vitamin D. Being naturally rich in vitamin D, Engevita can be used as a regular ingredient, without any label changes.
