Bisphenol A (BPA), last news from EFSA

BPA (CAS n. 80.05-7) is a chemical substance used mainly in association with other chemicals to manufacture plastics and resins. BPA is used to produce polycarbonate, a transparent hard type of highly performing plastic widely used in the food industry (food containers such as bottles, baby bottles, cups, dishes and other containers). BPA residues have been found also in coatings of food cans (beverages) and tubs made by epoxy resins. The concern is related to the fact that BPA may migrate from containers to food in minimal concentration but that can be adverse for humans. BPA is suspected to have negative effects on the immunological system.

EFSA have been assess the safety profile of BPA in Food Contact Material (FCM) several times in the last years; it published the results of its evaluation in January 2015 reducing the ADE (Admissible Daily Exposure) from 50 µg/kg a 4 µg/kg body weight /day. Such a temporary ADE, has engaged EFSA to evaluate BPA again in 2018 by the adoption of a scientific protocol finalized after a public consultation on the EFSA web site. Such scientific protocol was discussed on November 30, 2017 in Parma (Italy) by the scientific committees on FMC, Enzymes, Flavorings and Processing Aids. A new scientific group will start its activity in 2018 taking into account also results from the CLARITY-BPA project, developed in USA by NIEHS (National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences) and FDA (Food and Drug Administration) and coordinated by the NTP (National Toxicology Program). EFA will continue to cooperate also with ECHA and with all Member States scientific committee which are intensively working on BPA assessment.
